Smooooth baby, yeah!

There's a glut of polished synth pop bands insisting for attention at the moment. They're not coming from the nu-rave indie dance angle but from a smooth, R&B, production centered, house inspired enclave that we all thought was gone but due to the new pop revival has reared its head again!

Now some like :Kinema: are great and thats the point its all about how these bands carry it off, if its as housey and creepily smooth as :Kinema:s Circles EP I like it. The EP is like George Michael pinning Hot Chip up against the wall at R. Kellys coming out party, brilliant! (and that isnt just reviewing hyperbole its quite literal!)

But then you get bands like Fenech Soler, which me and Meatbreak championed a few years ago at Not For Resale when they sounded like Justice but who now sound like they think Duran Duran are a bit to edgy. Please dont let them be big in 2010. Please!

Neon Highwire are also an example of this type of band going wrong though they seem to have listen to Test Icicles a little too much (like what year is this?) Read their Myspace press release and it makes you want to cut your ears off it's so damn safe.

This is just a taster, there are a whole bunch more, alot from LA (often a three piece, not sure why?) I would have used Magistrates as a really good example but they've just split up!

The Countryside Alliance Crew!

The Countryside Alliance Crew come together for a rural rendition of We Are Rural supporting farmers across the world. Download this track free, and give what you can to Farm Africa, supporting farmers in the third world:

www.farmafrica.org.uk/

Download the track for free here:

There comes a time
When we head a certain call
When the herd must come together as one
There are cows dying
And it's time to lend a hand to livestock
The greatest gift of all We can't go on
just growing crops and making hay

thinking someone, somewhere will soon make a change
We are all a part of
a rural community
And the truth, you know is farming's all we need

[Chorus]
We are rural
We are the farmers
We are the ones who make the best hay
So let's start sowing
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our livestock
It's true we'll make better hay
Just you and me

Send them your hay
So they'll know that someone cares
And their livestock will be stronger and free
You can leave your cows in the fields, and grow corn instead
And we all can be farming hands

[Chorus]
We are rural
We are the farmers
We are the ones who make the best hay
So let's start sowing
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our livestock
It's true we'll make better hay
Just you and me

When you're down the pub
There seems no hope at all
But if you just believe
There's no way our crops can fail
Well, well, well, well, let us fertilize
Cos a change will only come
When we farm, farm together as one

[Chorus]
We are rural
We are the farmers
We are the ones who make the best hay
So let's start sowing
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our livestock
It's true we'll make better hay
Just you and me

We are rural
We are the farmers
We are the ones who make the best hay
So let's start farming
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our livestock
It's true we'll make better hay
Just you and me

We are rural
We are the farmers
We are the ones who make the best hay
So let's start farming
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our livestock
It's true we'll make better hay
Just you and me

We are rural
We are the farmers
We are the ones who make the best hay
So let's start farming
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our livestock
It's true we'll make better hay
Just you and me

Edward Sharpe & TheMagnetic Zeros album news!

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros are a wonderful band out of their time. Timeless rather than retro, modern hippies in the great hopefilled sence of the word, that created amazing events and communities in the late 60s and early 70s.
They take you to the dessert and start a new life, a world of poetry and waking at dawn to see the new world, a new way of living away from the indignities of modern life.

Remember the commune they visit in the dessert in Easy Rider, filled with performers and musicians that Peter Fonda says 'will make it'? Well they did and here are their children!

Their self titled album released in july this year is being featured on Amazon mp3 download as one of the 50 albums for $5 if you live in the United States! But here in the UK thats 13 utterly brilliant songs for only £8.98! Amazing! The link to it is here.

Here also is the video for their single 'Home'

Doll and The Kicks party in the Argus!!

Look at this people, it made the Argus newspaper! And I'm quoted too!!

"Went to this house party last night in deepest darkest Hove to see Doll and The Kicks play at this girls parents house. I got invited pretty much by some randoms and so I guess did half of Brighton 'cos it was totally crashed out! Place got trashed!"

Except that in the article they removed my over use of exlamation marks, personally I see that as a miss quote. My blog post is also described as "boasting!" Brilliant!

So here is the exclusive first showing of the video for the Doll & The Kicks new single "You Turn Up"

Tuesday 27 October 2009

Doll and The Kicks, party trashed and Morrissey ill..

Its a pretty bad week for Doll and The Kicks! First their fans trash some poor girls house, which they had to "square" with her parents (wonder how much that cost?) and now Morrissey goes and flakes on them by getting all "ill" and cancelling the tour, so there goes their great support slot!

Here are some better pics I got hold of from their facebook crashed party.

(All pics by Deano Harrington.)

George Lenton, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.

..and just when I was getting a bit bored of dubstep I go and find something like this! George Lenton
Found it from the Missing Thumbs blog which always is good for finding great tracks!

Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros are a band I know little about but they have a Dark Meat/Flaming Lips feel and this video epic for one of their songs out this year is totally AMAZING!

Doll and The Kicks party gets facebook crashed!

Haha that was fun! ..went to this house party last night in deepest darkest Hove to see Doll and The Kicks play at this girls parents house, she won some competition to have them play..
I got invited pretty much by some randoms and so I guess did half of Brighton 'cos it was totally crashed out! Place got trashed! I left before it got totally fucked but her are some pics of the escalating carnage!

Bosco Delrey

Bosco Delrey is a New Jersey born artist that makes psychedelic rockabilly dancehall. Think Simple Kid with breakbeats or Donavan with toasting and bass!
Also reminds me of a spaced out version of Brightons very own Mc Fashion, its got the same ska/beats factor.

He's been about (on myspace at least!) for the last 4 years but only recently seems to be kicking it! But is still unsigned!
There's been some air play on Sindens show on KISS fm. And he appears in the Mad Decent block party video I've posted recently, looking both out of place and totally at home!

Although unsigned he has 2 songs out with Klash City Records; "Space Junky" and "Round Round (feat. 77Klash)" Although there are rumours of something coming out in January next year! Both these tracks can be downloaded from RCRDLBL.

This guy is brilliant and very hard to find anything on him anywhere on the internet! People are missing out!

This looks like the best party EVER, who wants to come with me to Philly next August to attend the next one!!

SUNNO))) Jeans Ad!!!

So Sunn0))) have gone and done an ad but its so good you cant be mad!
Its for Anti-Sweden jeans, which are pretty sweet and its just such a nice bit of film/art/animation! Meatbreak says it all better on the NFR blog.
I know the video goes over the links to the right but I want you to see it as big as possible!

Twisted Wires are SOOOO cool!

So.. Twisted Wires, on Italians Do It Better, are amazing!

The three songs posted on their myspace go from psychadelic post punk, backed by gothic choir samples, to dark synth tech noir with giant echoing guitar parts, to spacey disco delay pedal ballad! Its like having three bands in one!

From Houstan Texas, they have a gig with Pearl Harbour and Nite Jewel
coming up in LA on the 22nd July, which would be amazing to see, (They look SO cool!)

Shame I'm thousands of miles away!

Check them out some more and keep a look out for their release! "One Night At The Raw Deal" ..its iether about to come out or already has!

Saturday 4 July 2009

Pearl Harbour, Califonian surfer reverb.

I heard about these guys from Skull Kontrol blog. This is like a Vivian Girls down the echoes of a perfect californian swell. Melodic, psychedelic, reverb garage with all the hard edges smoothed away by the waves. Delving into some of the more missed out aspects of all this 60s garage punk sonic mine that the 21st century is digging into. For example, noodling guitar work with a clear sound. No Distortion!
Stoner without the paranoia!

Pearl Harbour is just two LA girls, Sky and Piper, they have a CD-R with handmade cover art called "Calistonia Dreamin' Sessions" which you can buy of them from their myspace.
Plus a 12" ep out on Mexican Summer in October.

If you love Pearl Harbour then you'll also love Best Coast! -same place, same sound, same weed!

Busy Signal, Major Lazer, Foulplay and Geometri! (what I'm listening to right now!)

Everyone loves that old Justice Vs Simian "We Are Your Friends" track.. yeah? Bet you'll love it more when its sampled in this wonderfully disturbing dancehall track by Busy Signal -"Just Wanna Fuck (DJayCee B-More Blend)"
It goes from being an inclusive anthemic feel good song to being used repeatedly in the line: "I just wanna fuck 'your friends'.." Again and again!
The link above is a download!

Also been listening to a lot of Major Lazer, dancehall for white kids, (here's their myspace.)

And just discovered Foulplay Dubstep on myspace, from Florida, its a record label, kinda American dubstep come drum&bass with a big roster of artists , all lonely white guys in their bedrooms, all pretty good though!

Also listening to one of Brightons electro finest,
◢ GE◐METRI ◣! Their remix of Evil Nine's "Set it off" is killer! Their Myspace has a whole series of downloads for you to grab!

Somewhere I have a photo of me when I was about 2 years old and Carlos from Geometri sitting together in a motorcycle sidecar! I'm naked a chewing on the rubber up-holstery.. he's a year or two older and looks kinda embarrassed/cool! I'll find it some point and re-post!!

Monday 1 June 2009

The Girls At Dawn.

The Girls At Dawn:

= lo-fi, 60s garage, Shaggs/Shangris-Las/Supremes/Crystal Stilits psyche out!

= jangle, giant reverb, la la las, echoe, drifting, distortion, harmonies!

= 3 killer Brooklyn girls with stuff out soon on Hozac,! Probably a 7"! Keep an eye out for it cos it'll be gone as quick as Diana Ross can say Jesus And Mary Chain!

Check their myspace quick now!

p.s. there will be some ugly bands I write about at some point too, trust me!

Kasms, Spayed and Male Bonding!

..are just brilliant! I've been playing them out since they were only a few months old, pre single/album etc, which I hope they don't mind, I have had a really good response to them so it's all promo!

Here is more from them:
Myspace
and website!

Their Album "Spayed" is out since 11th of May and is ace, the single "male bonding" is out and free here.

..and to top it all they are just TOO hot!

This Mono Galaxy

This Mono Galaxy are a Brighton duo boldly, bravely and relentlessly pursuing an 80s new romantic synth pop dream without the accolades they so dearly deserve. Masters of the quiet desperation dance pop song they have been pretty prolific! This video comes from their 2nd album "I Am Not No - One"

Check their Myspace,
or website and leave them some love!

Ebola~Remix of Meddle by Little Boots ..(dubstep remix of lame neu disco but good)
Twisted Wires~Ripe For The Somthin ..(industrial gothness with Cult'esque vocals)
Alec Empire~If You Live Or Die ..(he's gone a bit XTRMNTR but its all good!)
Hostage Remix of The Prodigys Take Me To The Hospital ..(its very hard to hear where the Prodigy in this, maybe it was mis-labeled when I downloaded it?)
Bat For Lashes~Daniel Duke Dumont remix ..(same again, this is all squeaky rave-step vocals and no real 'Tash vocals!)
White Fang~Tall Shadow ..(Punk, anti-folk shortness)
Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds~Hitchhiking ..(the new Andre Williams/Mick Collins)
Black Moth Super Rainbow~Born On A Day The Sun Didn't Rise ..(but definately born on a day when BMSR did another lovely song just like all their others)

Fringe Festival Weekender Brighton

Me and Meatbreak are djing every night at The Fringe Festival Weekender at The Druids on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th May! Much noise and guitars and boose and everything the poster says really! Its free so there aint no excuses other than you dont live nearby!!

Monday 20 April 2009

S.C.U.M

The "Society for Cutting Up Men" was a Feminist art movment/action group. This is not them. Though the band do quote them in their Myspace.
S.C.U.M are a brillaint goth noise band from London wearing its influences visably on its sleave. But doing it so well it hurts. Its all Throbbing Gristle, industrial noisescapes and Bauhaus, Joy Division epic dub reverb and darkness inducing Alien Sex Fiendness!

S.C.U.M. - Warsaw from Liz Armstrong on Vimeo.
If The Horrors are moving in a blissed out goth noise direction then S.C.U.M are taking broken bottles and slashing their wrists in order to drink the Morphine rich blood!
They have a debut single "Visions Arrive" which is sold out and are on tour, playing Brighton on 6th May at New Hero and again during the Great Escape festival! Do not miss them!

Friday 10 April 2009

Hobo Cubes.

Here's a hard to listen to gem from Hobo Cult Records. "Prayers" By Hobo Cubes, an eleven track free album for download.
For an idea here's a track of theirs from last year called "Spiritual Hangover" which is a gentle pretty thing compared to 2009s outing!

Big Sticks Drag Racingvideo!

A classic Calvin Harris Twitter, un-edited from 6/4/09:

On an overcrowded train to newcastle blagging it in first class ordered a meal hopefully they don't move me before it comes.

Soup course over...still in first, fighting the machine fuck you national express and your 'rules' what a thrill what a buzz.

Main course successfully consumed! Back once again for the renegade master d4 damager power to the people!

No 'ill behaviour' from me though, my table manners are impeccable.

Ok what now? Dessert? Dare I? The final nail in the coffin for national express' ticketing system! A costly mistake but they will learn.

Man alive I even took an after eight. This is the single most rebellious thing anybody has ever done and you are wrong to think otherwise.

And now a cup of tea. The decadence! I'm going to let this tea go cold thus rendering it useless as a final act of rebellion.

Heard that Eoghan Quigg's cover of Year 3000 in the lift at 6music today. It was fucking shite.

Ok I've been rumbled by 'the man'. I have no means of paying so they're deciding what to do with me! I'll go down fighting.

I'm going to take a shit in the first class toilets as a final 'fuck you'.

Last stop and lo, the ticket man cometh. This is where it all falls apart comrades, what to do? Last resort : pretend I'm fucking mental.

Banging out Dance Area 'A A 24 7' to scare them off. Playing 2 slightly out of sync on itunes and quicktime simultaneously. Intense.

I made it without paying what a buzz and made metro radio in time the people of newcastle weren't deprived of my diamond chat, good end.

Good Lord just saw you can get it at Tesco's for 57p! 57p!!! That track took me 2 years! 57p! 2 years! 57p! No wonder music's on it's arse x

Tuesday 24 March 2009

Bigzy & Unkle do am-dram dance..

It was SOOOOO good playing this to the crowd at The Clockwork Archipeligo at the weekend!
I was so hoping someone would do the dance, but no! Seeing dread headed girls dressed as hippo strippers or gold latex statues doing their own ass shaking to it though was funny enough!!

Monday 23 March 2009

The Clockwork Archipeligo weekend.

The Clockwork Archipeligo was this weekend just gone (saturday/sunday) A group event from a whole bunch of steam punk, burlesque, circus freak, festival types that took place in some unused old garage spaces under the Brighton train station.

Loads of performances and bands, a bar and a food bar and djing! If you werent there you missed out on seeing Mr Jack Cooper, Restlesslist and the Bobby McGees playing live as well as a host of folk/jazz punk performance (..bad!)

Mr Jack Cooper lost his voice at the end of the set just in time for their new track "Lynks Africa" which is almost lyricless, all afro beats and 90's rave keys! V Good!

I played my usual stupid mix records which included: Betty Boo, Dj Assault, Journey, Ebola, Les Rythmes Digitales, Fantomas, Bigzy, Technotronic, Disco Devil and Bikini Kill.

Tuesday 17 March 2009

Horrors come back.. much cheering!

Midnight on the 17th March, some eager beaver on Twitter alerts me and totally by surprise I find myself viewing the new Horrors stuff. Their entire site is given over to the video for their new single "Sea Within A Sea" (8 mins long!) AND there's a free mp3 of the song!

Blissed-out 80s post-punk goth-synth joy.
Check it!
