Albums are designed to keep you down, to keep you at home listening quietly for an hour or so, albums are an opium kosh. Singles are a line of speed, they are about the now, they hit you up with instant engagement, no singles have to "grow on you", they are for going out, on the move, songs for action and life. Singles are revolutionary, albums are the the prison you need to break out of... Eps on the other hand are little manifestos for life.
Thanks to Bill Drummond's recent critique of Classic Albums for these ideas.
With All this in mind here is a great all girl punk band with influences from Riot Grrrl and Grunge and all manner of immediate vital sounds. The band are Skinny Girl Diet, they're from London and they play fast and just about keep up. It slays. Download what you want from their Soundcloud. Support you local girl gang.
Here's another great American guitar band only this one hasn't any guitars in it. Acid Kicks is made up of three bass players and one drummer. Hailing from Philadelphia they make a cacophony of punk prog sound, epic swirling sludge and and rocking psychedelia, like Hawkind running into a band like Gonga or Teeth Of The Sea and deciding to get their gay skinhead mates to chase them through town. It's brilliant stuff.
Go download their "Life Dreams" 7inch release from Bandcamp for $4. If you spend a bit more then you can get the vinyl and if you spend a bit more than that then they will send you a dreamcatcher with the release as well! There's also a slightly more recent live release -"Live At Silk City" which you can download from their Bandcamp for free if you want.
This band are totally brilliant, this is hardcore punk in the grungy prog psychedelic noise vein that a band like Fucked Up or ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead or sometimes Sonic Youth do/did. Hailing from Syracuse NY, this mostly all girl band are called Shoppers and they kick ass through the wall. They also only number their songs not name them. Go listen to all their stuff on Bandcamp. Their LP Silver Year is available through Feeble Minds and Drugged Conscience .
